An overseas employer or income source may need different verification. Keep the assessment focused on the actual evidence and the ability to pay the agreed rent.
Establish the income
- Identify who pays, the amount, frequency, currency and whether the arrangement will continue after the move.
- Consider conversion and transfer costs using a clear assumption rather than promising a fixed future exchange rate.
- Ask for an appropriate translation where necessary to understand material terms.
Verify the reference
- Check the organisation through reliable independent contact details.
- Allow for different document formats and normal overseas practices without assuming a document is false.
- Use a proportionate alternative if the standard referencing provider cannot assess the evidence.
Make a consistent decision
- Record the relevant uncertainty and how it was resolved.
- Check any proposed guarantee or payment arrangement under the country's rules.
- Restrict access to identity and financial documents and do not circulate them unnecessarily.
Example: income is paid in another currency
A fictional applicant is paid in euros but the rent is in pounds. Discuss conversion and transfer timing and assess the evidence. Record the assumption used; do not present today's exchange rate as a guaranteed future income.
What to do
- Agree suitable evidence and any necessary translation.
- Verify the source and consider currency or payment timing.
- Keep immigration checks separate and apply them only where required.
Evidence to keep
- Income and reference evidence, verification notes and relevant calculations.
- Decision record and any agreed supporting arrangement.
